250 ENTRANTS COMPLETE THE 3 ESTATES FUN RUN
15th Mar 2009
They were all ages and different fitness levels, but the 250 entrants in the 3 Estates Fun Run all had one thing in common, loads of energy and enthusiasm.
The competitors, supporters, friends and families all assembled at the start/finish line in Hawkesley Square in the Sunday morning sunshine. M.C Ahmed Kaballo introduced Positive Futures girl dance group Street Movers who led a lively pre-run warm up routine.
Then just after 10 o’clock the serious runners set off. They were followed by the fun runners and walkers. The 5km route (made one way to traffic) followed Shannon Road, Longdales Road, Primrose Hill and back into Shannon Road. Volunteer stewards who had completed S.I.A. training for last year's 3 EstatesFestival and MAC Event Security supervised the Run. Kings Norton Community Police cyclists escorted the runners and walkers. The St John Ambulance Service also attended. For the large crowd of local residents not taking part in the run, there was plenty to see in the square. Therewere stalls representing 3 Estates No Smoking, Gateway Family Services,Foodnet, Fit for Life and Prospects. A face painting session kept young children entertained. Solihull CollegeSport Therapy had an impressive array of massage tables ready to treat competitors’ aching muscles after the run. The R.S.P.C.A who donated the bags for water bottles and other goodies also had a stall. A collection by their volunteers raised £60.
Excitement mounted in the square when the arrival of the first runners was announced. As they crossed the finish line, greeted by cheering and applause, each was given a commemorative medal, water and had a foil heat sheet wrapped round them. Gradually the rest of the entrants
began to arrive hot and out of breath. But they all had great big smiles and the look on their faces that said, “Yes I've done it. I've done something special today.” They really had. Serious and fun runners, walkers, those in fancy dress, mums with babies in buggies, all enjoyed a fabulous community event.
But there was still more to come. Professional football freestyler Colin Nell gave a mind boggling display ofhis incredible ball control skills. Colin, who has featured in many high profile
media campaigns, also invited some of the Fun Run entrants to have a go. They were pretty impressive too.
