About Kings Norton 3 Estates
Kings Norton 3 Estates Community Development Trust is the organisation delivering the New Deal for Communities Programme in Kings Norton.
New Deal for Communities is a government-funded initiative which was set up in 1999. There are 39 New Deal programmes nationally. Each one has been given in the region of £50 million to tackle deprivation in some of the country’s poorest neighbourhoods.
Each NDC aims to bring together local people, community and voluntary organisations, public agencies, local authorities and business to develop a co-ordinated approach to issues such as:
¨ Unemployment and low pay
¨ Community Safety
¨ Housing
¨ Health and care
¨ Education
Kings Norton 3 Estates Community Development Trust (CDT) is the organisation set up to deliver the New Deal programme in Kings Norton. Activity is centred on the area known as the 3 Estates, which includes Hawkesley, Pool Farm and Primrose estates.
The CDT is made up of 23 members, a mixture of locally-elected residents and community partners, representing a variety of knowledge and expertise required to deliver the programme. The CDT’s aims are to promote the sustainable physical, economic and social regeneration of the 3 Estates.
Decisions made by the CDT are implemented by the New Deal for Communities Team. This is a staff body employed by Birmingham City Council. The council has overall accountability for how the NDC money is spent.
Much progress has already been made. Here is a small snapshot of some of the initiatives set up so far:
¨ Community Warden scheme
¨ Community Chest, which awards small grants to community groups
¨ The Work Shop, which offers advice and support to job seekers
¨ The Community Advice Team, which offers advice to residents on a wide range of issues
¨ The Community Forum, which works to support community groups and promote community
involvement
